April Showers Not to Be Feared at This Elegant Colony Club Wedding

20160416_164515April signals the start of wedding season here in Michigan, though outdoor weddings are still risky. As any Michigander will tell you, our April weather is unpredictable. Take this year for example; we experienced a surprising 3 inches of snow one day followed by 70 degrees just two days later.   Margaux and Jordan did not have weather concerns on their wedding day as they wisely chose the gorgeous Colony Club in downtown Detroit for their ceremony, cocktails and reception.  If you’ve not been downtown lately, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.  New construction and renovation of many charming architectural gems is visible throughout the city. A growing number of casual and fine dining restaurants, theatres, casinos, shopping, townhomes and arenas offer residents in the surrounding Detroit communities a variety of opportunities and reasons to make a trip downtown. On our way to Jordan and Margaux’s wedding, we passed well-dressed couples leaving the Fox Theater following an afternoon performance while walking in the opposite direction, baseball fans were headed to Comerica Park for one of the Tiger’s first games of the season. Many folks are even taking the plunge and moving into the city itself. In a January Detroit News article, author Louis Aguilar noted “This year in the 7.2-square-mile heart of Detroit, educated middle-class people likely will fill the estimated 1,200 to 1,400 apartments expected to open in the downtown, Midtown, Corktown, East Riverfront, Brush Park, New Center, Lafayette Park and Eastern Market.  Many residents will be new to the city, based on trends of the past few years.”

Within this re-creation of a great American city, occurred the creation of a new marriage, led by officiant Bill Fenton of “I Do’s Your Way” and guided by Bertha, wedding coordinator at the Colony Club. The ceremony incorporated both Christian and Jewish traditions, including the Lord’s Prayer during the unity candle and the celebratory breaking of the glass.  Viviano Flower Shop never disappoints and created stunning arrangements that flanked the alter area.  Sweet Dreams Bakery produced a stunning wedding cake showcasing a cascade of flowers.

Following the ceremony guests were invited downstairs for cocktails. The Bluewater Kings, an excellent wedding band, completed the evening with their high-energy music that had Margaux and Jordan’s guests celebrating well into the evening.  Best wishes to the couple!
